What’s in a Facial Injection?
Many men and women who opt for filler injections wish to refresh and rejuvenate their appearance without undergoing surgery. While filler injections are revered for their immediate results and short recovery time, proper research must be done whenever deciding to inject a foreign substance or formulation into the body. During a consultation at the Northfield or Hoffman Estates locations, Dr. Anthony J. Geroulis can discuss with you the particular filler injection which will yield the greatest results, in addition to the benefits and risks associated with each one.
Collagen and hyaluronic acid are naturally present in the skin and both diminish with age. Facial wrinkles and creases can start to appear as the underlying cell structure of collagen and elastin fibers break down and wear out. While this breakdown is part of the natural aging process, skin structure can prematurely become modified from excessive squinting, frowning or smiling. Fillers can go a long way to correct skin structure and restore the lost volume that contributes to an aged, weary, or tired looking appearance.
Restylane, a form of hyaluronic acid, is a biodegradable, formulation of vegetable origin and is compatible with skin tissues. It is very safe and is recommended for those with allergies to collagen. However, individuals with a lidocaine allergy should not get a Restylane injection. Restylane is typically injected into the lips and surrounding area to produce natural, fuller lips and reduce fine lines along the lip’s border.
Similar to Restylane injections, Juvederm injections replenish the skin’s own hyaluronic acid (a natural sugar compound) that has become depleted over time, resulting in a sunken looking and more hollow appearance to the face. Once injected, the face immediately takes on a revitalized and more youthful appearance. Because Juvederm® contains lidocaine, it is not recommended for those with a specific lidocaine allergy. Juvederm® injections target pronounced nasolobial skin folds around the mouth, chin wrinkles and marionette smile and laugh lines.
Radiesse is comprised of a calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) solution, injected strategically under the skin to fill in crevices, wrinkles and folds, particularly in the cheek area. The injected CaHA is compatible with the body and identical in nature to the mineral portion in teeth and bones. Radiesse injections have an additional benefit: one injection can stimulate the body’s own natural collagen production to sustain a softer and fuller facial appearance, even after injection. Skilled injection of this filler in strategic, targeted areas of the face by a surgeon of vigorous judgement and in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy can “naturally” plump up specific sunken areas to restore or recreate the shape of the face, which has flattened over time. With this “facelift by the needle,” patients can expect a softer, fuller face that is youthful looking and healthy in appearance with downtime that is measured in hours, rather than days.
While Botox Cosmetic is not technically considered a facial filler, it is often used in conjunction with Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse to produce a more even, balanced result. Botox is the first botulinum toxin to be FDA-approved in order to temporarily treat frown lines. Dr. Geroulis injects the muscles with Botox so that the nerve impulses are temporarily blocked so preventing further excessive skin creases. Wrinkles lines are considerably improved 48 hours following injection. The number of units required varies considerably from 20 to 60 units for one area and again according to the amount of specific areas to be targeted for wrinkle reduction. Whether patients wish to soften and correct the lines between their eyebrows, on their forehead and around their lateral eyes or some combination of all three, patients can achieve a softer and less harsh looking facial appearance. When used at the dose recommended by a skilled cosmetic surgeon, there has been no reported cases of the spread of toxin effect. Safe to use in the minute quantities that are administered, Botox® serves as an excellent preventative strategy for wrinkle onset.
Although all these injections eventually undergo complete resorption and subsequent injections are needed, they do provide, to those not quite ready for surgical correction, the opportunity to dramatically reduce frown and squint lines as well as preview results that may be achieved with alternative more permanent surgical approaches.
